Engineering doesn’t just take place at your desk anymore. Whether it’s in meetings, in the field, or on the road, you have work to do. That’s why we’ve listed the top 5 apps for that engineers should have.
1. iEngineer
This is a great app for engineers working with threaded connections. You can quickly scroll through a large library of US and metric screws, and the app will tell you the major/minor diameters, drill size, and even the allowable loads, torque specs, and clamping force!
This app is really useful for those engineers that spend a portion of their day working with fabricators, or fabricating parts themselves. No need to go back to your desk for a torque spec.
2. eDrawings
This app lets you view Solidworks models and drawings from your smartphone. It sounds like a toy, but this has actually come in quite handy. People who aren’t engineers sometimes have trouble reading drawings, and being able to show them a 3D model is priceless. In 2 seconds they can get a feel for the design that would take them way longer when looking at a drawing.
3. iCircuit
With this app, you can create your circuits using over 30 parts from the library. The best part is the simulation engine that can handle both digital and analog circuits. It’s a surprisingly powerful tool at your fingertips.
4. Steam Tables
This is another app that’s handier than you would think. It’s nice to be able to scratch something out really quick in a meeting to prove your point or do a quick what-if. We’ve used it to see how close we were to cavitation on the suction side of a pump. Just give it a pressure or a temperature, and it will give you the conditions at saturation.
5. Smart Tools HD
Sometimes you just need a quick measurement in the field. This app lets you measure things we didn’t even know a smartphone could do. You can measure distances, angles, slopes, vibrations, sound, even magnetic fields! This app also comes with a flashlight, magnifier and a GPS!
